The eSports story has a movie formula going for it: the shot opens onto a stadium filled with screaming, frenzied fans, and the camera zooms in onto the contestants, each dripping with sweat due to how intense the competition is.

A game for couples carries a warning: ‘potential to cause anger, pain, hurt, frustration and jealousy’. No this is not the one which has the inclusion of pheromones for men and women and some really interesting bedroom scenes going about. We are talking of the one that Tim Lott tried.

Family games can be hazardous. I have witnessed meltdowns while playing Monopoly, fights during Frustration and ugly scenes at Uno, but a new card game puts all these others in the shade. The Art of Couples Conversation contains a hazard warning. When playing the game “potential exists for feelings of anger, pain, hurt, frustration, jealousy and other emotions perceived as negative that most of us try to avoid”. These days it is considered fairly normal to open one no-trump when you are in the right range even if you have a five-card major. This may be “normal” for most people but my bridge partner, Nicola Smith, has a bit of a bee in her bonnet about it. Accordingly we have developed our bidding system to avoid this. At first I thought she was a bit eccentric, but as time progresses I have begun to appreciate the advantages of such a style.
